Modern social media are a huge spreader
of misinformation in our current society. Allthough social media platforms in general are aware of this and
somewhat try to combat this phenomenon,
the current direction Twitter is taking towards 'free speech' without 'responsibility' is a giant step in the wrong direction
when it comes to preventing misinformation from spreading. More than being a catalyst for open discussion,
it serves as a catalyst for ignorance.
Furthermore, this is amplified by the algortihms employed by most social media. These algorithms are designed to serve content which
the users are most likely to interact with and react positively to. This creates a cycle of affirmation without end. It also enhances polarisation and groupthink,
because people are more likely to get served posts by likeminded individuals.
